Fundamentals of Pumps
Pumps are used for increasing the liquid pressure. Mechanical energy in pumps is taken from a foreign source and given to the fluid. However fluid energy is increased after leaving the pump. Pumps are divided into two categories according to the way of transmitting energy:
1. Dynamic pumps: In which energy transferring to fluid is permanently.
2. Displacement pumps: In which energy transferring to fluid is periodic.
According to the operating conditions, pumps are built in different types, casing material and designs:
– Centrifugal pumps
– Axial pumps
– Semi centrifugal pumps
Since pumps are widely used in different production plants, having knowledge about the types, application, operation, maintenance and the other related topics is necessary for those who are involved in.
